10 Best AI Customer Support Tools for Small Businesses in 2026
For a small business, customer support is a constant tax on time. The same questions arrive every day: where is my order, how do I return this, what are your hours. AI support tools promise to answer those questions automatically and leave you with the conversations that need a person.
The promise is real, but so are the pricing traps. Many vendors now charge per AI-resolved conversation, on top of or instead of a monthly fee. This guide compares ten tools, with prices where I could read them on the vendor’s own page, and explains how to avoid a surprise bill.
Prices below were read from vendor pages in October 2026. Several pages did not say whether a price was monthly or annual, so confirm everything on the live page before you buy.
How AI Support Pricing Works
Before comparing tools, it helps to know the three billing models you will meet:
- Per seat. You pay for each human agent who uses the help desk. Cost grows with team size.
- Per resolution. You pay only when the AI fully handles a conversation without handing it to a human. Cost grows with success.
- Per conversation or credit. You get a monthly allowance of AI conversations or credits and pay extra beyond it.
Many tools combine two of these. A help desk might charge $19 to $55 per agent and also bill $1.50 to $2 for each AI resolution. When you compare prices, estimate your monthly volume first. A shop with 300 conversations a month and one with 3,000 will see very different bills from the same tool.
How We Picked These Tools
We chose tools that a small business can start using without a sales call, that have a published price or a free plan, and that include an AI feature that answers customers. We dropped tools where the pricing page showed no figures at all, unless they are widely used and we say so clearly.
The Ten Tools
1. Tidio
Tidio is a live chat and chatbot tool built for small online shops. Its AI agent, called Lyro, answers questions from your help content and can run flows for common tasks.
The free plan includes 50 billable conversations a month, 10 seats, and 50 Lyro AI conversations in total, which do not refresh monthly. Paid plans start at $24.17 a month for Starter and about $49.17 for Growth, with a Plus plan from $300 plus usage. The page does not label whether these are monthly or annual prices, though they match an annual rate. Lyro is also sold on its own, from $32.50 a month for 50 conversations, with a 7-day trial.
Best for: online shops that want live chat and a basic AI agent in one place.
Watch out for: the free AI allowance is small and does not renew, so test with real questions before you rely on it.
2. Intercom (Fin AI Agent)
Intercom pioneered chat-based support and now sells Fin, an AI agent that resolves conversations. Fin costs from $0.99 per outcome, with no seats required, according to the pricing page. Intercom’s help desk seat plans start at $29 per seat a month for Essential, $85 for Advanced, and $132 for Expert, and the Essential plan includes Fin.
Best for: teams that want a polished AI agent and are comfortable paying per outcome.
Watch out for: the page does not state a minimum, trial length, or whether seat prices are monthly or annual. Ask before you commit, and estimate how many outcomes you expect each month.
3. Zendesk
Zendesk is the standard help desk for growing teams. Its Suite Team plan is listed at $55 per agent a month billed yearly, or $69 monthly, and Suite Professional at $115 or $149. Its AI agents charge by automated resolution: Suite Team includes 5 resolutions per agent per month, then $1.50 each on a committed basis or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. A 14-day trial is available.
Best for: businesses that expect to grow and want a mature system.
Watch out for: Zendesk counts only requests the AI resolves without a human. Zendesk’s page notes prices may have changed since it was published, so check them with sales before you budget.
4. Freshdesk
Freshdesk by Freshworks is a lower-cost help desk. The Growth plan is listed at $19 per agent a month billed annually, Pro at $55, and Enterprise at $89. Each includes the Freddy AI Agent with the first 500 sessions, and extra sessions cost $49 per 100. A Copilot add-on for agents costs $29 per agent a month on Pro and Enterprise. There is no free plan, but a 14-day trial of Enterprise is offered.
Best for: small teams that want an affordable help desk with AI built in.
Watch out for: monthly prices are not shown on the page, and session-based billing means traffic spikes can raise your cost.
5. Help Scout
Help Scout is a help desk with a human feel, popular with small teams that want email-style support. Paid plans are listed at $25 (Standard), $45 (Plus), and $75 (Pro) per user a month, though the page does not label the billing cycle. There is also a Free plan for up to 5 users, 1 inbox, and 1 Docs site.
Its AI Answers add-on costs $0.75 per resolution, and the page advertises a 3-month trial with unlimited resolutions. AI Drafts are included on Plus and Pro, and a 15-day trial is offered on Standard and Plus without a credit card.
Best for: teams that want AI help without losing a personal tone.
Watch out for: AI Answers is a paid add-on. Estimate your resolutions before the free period ends.
6. HubSpot Service Hub
HubSpot Service Hub works well if you already use HubSpot for sales or marketing. The Free plan covers up to 2 users with live chat and email. Starter is listed from $7 a month per seat (another figure of $20 also appears), and Professional from $90 or $100 per seat, with a one-time $1,500 onboarding fee. The AI Customer Agent uses HubSpot Credits, which cost $0.010 each when purchased, and the page does not say how many credits one conversation uses.
Best for: businesses already inside the HubSpot ecosystem.
Watch out for: AI cost is hard to predict because credit usage per conversation is on a separate rate sheet. Ask for it before you commit.
7. Crisp
Crisp is a flexible chat and inbox tool with an AI chatbot. The Free plan includes 2 agent seats and 100 customer profiles, but no AI credits. Paid plans are Mini at $45, Essentials at $95, and Plus at $295 a month per workspace. AI credits are bundled with each plan: about 90 automated conversations on Mini, 450 on Essentials, and 1,350 on Plus.
Best for: small teams that want one price per workspace instead of per seat.
Watch out for: the free plan has no AI, so you must upgrade to test the chatbot. The page prices are listed in dollars without VAT.
8. Gorgias
Gorgias is built for ecommerce, especially Shopify stores, and the page says it powers support for 40% of Shopify brands. Its AI Agent is included on every plan, and you pay only when it resolves a conversation. The page does not list prices or the per-resolution rate, and it describes ticket tiers from 50 to 5,000 a month.
Best for: online stores that want order-aware support.
Watch out for: with no prices shown, get a quote and ask for the resolution rate in writing.
9. Chatbase
Chatbase lets you build an AI chatbot trained on your own documents and website. Plans are Hobby at $40 a month ($32 annually) with 700 message credits, Standard at $150 ($120) with 4,000, and Pro at $500 ($400) with 15,000. There is no free plan, but paid plans have a 7-day trial. Extra credits cost $40 per 1,000, and removing the “Powered by Chatbase” label costs $1,188 a year.
Best for: adding a document-trained chatbot to a website without a full help desk.
Watch out for: branding removal and extra agents are sold separately, which can raise the real cost.
10. Zoho Desk
Zoho Desk is a low-cost help desk, especially for businesses already using Zoho apps. The page I could read showed prices only in Indian rupees: Express ₹420, Standard ₹800, Professional ₹1,400, and Enterprise ₹2,400 per user a month on annual billing. A Free Edition for three users and a 15-day trial are offered. AI features depend on the plan, from AI Agents and generative tools on Express to the Zia AI suite on Professional.
Best for: budget-conscious teams that already use Zoho.
Watch out for: the US dollar prices were not visible, so check your region’s page.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Ignoring per-resolution fees. A cheap seat price can hide a large AI bill. Estimate your monthly volume first.
Letting the AI answer without a human exit. Always give customers a clear way to reach a person, especially for refunds, complaints, and anything involving money.
Training the bot on messy content. An AI is only as good as the help articles you feed it. Update outdated policies before you turn it on.
Skipping testing. Ask the bot your 20 most common questions, plus a few tricky ones, before going live.
Not tracking results. Watch resolution rate, customer ratings, and handoffs to humans. If ratings drop, adjust or pause the AI.
Overlooking privacy. Customer conversations include personal data. Check where it is stored and whether it is used to train models.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a very small business use these tools? Yes. Tidio, Help Scout, HubSpot, Crisp, and Zoho Desk all have free plans, and some include limited AI features.
Which tool is cheapest to start? Tidio and Zoho Desk have the lowest listed starting prices, and several tools offer free plans. The cheapest total depends on your conversation volume.
Is per-resolution pricing better than per-seat pricing? It can be if your volume is low or unpredictable. At high volume, per-resolution fees can exceed a flat plan.
Will AI replace my support team? For repeat questions, AI can handle a large share. For complaints, edge cases, and sensitive issues, people are still needed.
What should I check before I sign up? Billing cycle, resolution definitions, free trial length, data handling, and how easily you can cancel.
The Bottom Line
The best AI customer support tool for a small business is the one whose pricing you can predict. Start with a free plan or trial, load it with your real help content, and test it on your most common questions. Then compare the full monthly cost, including AI resolution fees, at your actual volume.
