How to Create and Sell a Digital Product with AI: The 10 Tools You Actually Need

A digital product is anything customers can download or access without anything being shipped: an ebook, a planner, a spreadsheet template, a Notion template, a workbook, a short course, a set of prompts. AI has made the making part much faster. But the tool list online is long and confusing, and many of the “must-have” apps are optional.

This guide organizes the toolkit by stage: idea and writing, design, packaging, selling, and email. For each tool I read the official pricing, fee, or license page where it loaded, and I mark what I could not confirm. I interpreted “digital product” as something you create and sell. If you meant product management for software, tell me and I will write that version.

Prices and fees change often, so treat every number here as a snapshot and check the page before you commit.

The Toolkit at a Glance

Stage Tool Why you need it
Idea and writing Claude, ChatGPT Research, outlines, drafts, edits
Design Canva Covers, layouts, mockups
Templates and docs Notion Build and deliver templates
Visual guides Gamma Turn an outline into slides or a PDF
Selling Gumroad, Payhip, Lemon Squeezy, Etsy Checkout, delivery, tax
Email Kit Build an audience and sell directly

You do not need all ten. A beginner can start with one AI assistant, one design tool, and one selling platform.

Stage 1: Idea, Research, and Writing

1. Claude

An AI assistant is the core of the process. Use it to test ideas, list what customers struggle with, outline a product, draft sections, and edit your own writing. It handles long documents well, which helps when you want it to review a whole ebook for repeated points or gaps.

How to use it: give it your audience, the problem you solve, and the format. Ask for three outline options, then draft one section at a time and rewrite it in your own voice.

Watch out for: invented facts and statistics. Anything you state as fact needs a source you have checked. Free-plan limits vary, so check your account.

2. ChatGPT

A second assistant is useful for comparing outlines and getting a different angle. OpenAI’s help page says free users can upload a limited number of files per day, so for a long manuscript you may hit the cap. I did not verify the current plan details beyond that.

How to use it: paste your draft and ask, “What would a skeptical buyer say is missing?” Use the answers to improve the product page as well as the product.

Watch out for: generic writing. If a paragraph could appear in any ebook on the topic, rewrite it with your own examples.

Stage 2: Design and Packaging

3. Canva

Canva is the usual choice for ebook covers, workbooks, and printable templates. I could not load its pricing page, so I cannot tell you the plan prices here. What I can report comes from Canva’s Content License Agreement, which matters if you plan to sell.

According to that page:

  • Free Content may be used in templates for distribution or sale, and can be downloaded on a standalone basis.
  • Pro Content may not be distributed as a standalone item, and if your design contains any Pro Content you cannot use it for template sales.
  • For ebooks and other online publications, Pro Content is capped at 480,000 total pixels per unedited file.
  • AI-generated content is labeled Free or Pro and follows the rules of that category.
  • Using any content for machine-learning or AI purposes is prohibited.
  • In mixed designs, the most restrictive category applies to the whole design.

In plain terms: if you sell Canva templates or designs, check every element for the Pro label, and keep a note of what you used. I am not a lawyer, so read the agreement before you sell.

4. Notion

Notion is popular for selling planners, trackers, and wikis. Per its pricing page, the Free plan costs $0, Plus is $10 per member per month, and Business is $20. Notion AI is only a limited trial on Free and Plus, and the full agent features are on Business. The Free plan caps uploads at 5 MB per file and keeps page history for 7 days.

How to use it: build your template, test it from a blank account, then duplicate it for delivery.

Watch out for: AI features you may want are not fully included on the cheaper plans, so you can build the template without them.

5. Gamma

Gamma turns an outline into a slide-style document, which is handy for short guides, lead magnets, and course slides. Its pricing page lists export to PDF, PPTX, PNG, and Google Slides on the Free plan. It does not show plan prices or AI credit amounts in the text I could read, and Plus lists “Remove Gamma branding,” which suggests the free version carries branding.

How to use it: draft the outline with your AI assistant, paste it in, then edit every slide yourself.

Watch out for: branding on free exports, and unknown credit limits.

For cover art and illustrations, our guide to free AI image generators covers real limits and commercial-use questions to check.

Stage 3: Selling

Choosing where to sell affects how much you keep and who handles tax. Here is what each platform’s own page says.

6. Gumroad

Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 per transaction on sales through your profile or direct links, and 30% on sales from its Discover marketplace. There are no monthly charges. Gumroad acts as merchant of record and handles sales tax collection and remittance, including VAT and GST, at no extra cost. The page does not give payout schedules.

Best for: beginners who want the simplest setup and no tax paperwork.

Watch out for: the fixed $0.50 hurts low-priced products, and the 30% Discover rate applies if a marketplace customer finds you.

7. Payhip

Payhip’s Free plan has a 5% transaction fee. Plus costs $29 a month with a 2% fee, and Pro costs $99 a month with no transaction fee. The page says every plan includes all features and unlimited products and revenue. PayPal and Stripe charge their own standard rates on top. Payhip collects and remits EU and UK VAT and US and Canadian sales tax for you.

Best for: sellers who want a lower percentage and may grow into a paid plan.

Watch out for: processor fees on top of the platform fee.

8. Lemon Squeezy

Lemon Squeezy lists 5% plus 50 cents per transaction, no monthly fee for ecommerce features, and acts as merchant of record handling global VAT and sales tax. The page also shows a banner about a 2026 update involving Stripe Managed Payments that it does not explain, so check how that affects fees before you sign up.

Best for: sellers who want tax handled and a low percentage.

Watch out for: the unexplained Stripe update.

9. Etsy

Etsy is a marketplace where buyers already search. It charges a $0.20 listing fee per item and a 6.5% transaction fee on the displayed price, plus a payment processing fee that varies by the location of your bank account. The page I could read did not list the US processing rate. Etsy has its own rules about what can be sold and how AI is used, so review them before you list. Our guide to AI tools for Etsy sellers covers that in more detail.

Best for: printable and template products that buyers search for.

Watch out for: competition, and rules that can change.

What the fees look like on a $20 product

Using only the numbers the platforms state, and ignoring payment-processor fees and anything not listed:

Platform Stated fee On a $20 sale
Gumroad (direct) 10% + $0.50 $2.50
Payhip Free 5% $1.00, plus PayPal or Stripe rates
Lemon Squeezy 5% + $0.50 $1.50
Etsy 6.5% + $0.20 listing $1.30 plus the listing fee, plus processing

This is my own arithmetic from the published rates. Payment processing is handled differently on each platform, so compare what you actually receive on a test sale.

Stage 4: Email

10. Kit

Email lets you sell to people who already like your work. Kit’s pricing page lists a free plan with landing pages, forms, email broadcasts, and the ability to sell digital products and subscriptions. The page is inconsistent on details: it says “up to 10,000 subscribers” in one place and “1,000” in another, and it quotes both “0.6%” and “3.5% + 30c” for digital product fees. I could not resolve that from the page, so confirm the free subscriber cap and the transaction fee in your account before relying on either.

Best for: building an audience before or after you launch.

Watch out for: unclear subscriber limits and fee figures.

A Simple Launch Plan

  1. Pick one narrow problem. “A budget template for freelancers” beats “a finance guide.”
  2. Draft with an assistant, then rewrite. Use AI for structure and speed, and add your own experience.
  3. Design in one tool. Keep to free assets if you plan to sell templates.
  4. Test the product yourself. Open it on a phone and a laptop from a clean account.
  5. Choose one selling platform. Start simple and add a second later.
  6. Write a clear product page. Say who it is for, what is inside, and what is not.
  7. Collect emails from day one. A free sample is the easiest way.

A Starter Stack for Each Budget

  • Zero budget: an AI assistant on a free plan, Canva’s free content only, Notion’s Free plan for templates, and Payhip’s Free plan or Gumroad for selling. You pay only when you make a sale.
  • Small budget: add a paid design plan only if you need features the free tier lacks, and move to a paid selling plan once your monthly sales make the lower percentage worthwhile.
  • Audience first: start with Kit’s free plan and a free sample, then launch the product to your list.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Publishing AI drafts unedited. Buyers notice generic writing, and unchecked facts hurt trust.

Ignoring license rules. Selling a template that contains restricted design elements can cause problems. Check each element.

Choosing a platform by headline fee only. Compare tax handling, fixed fees, and processor charges.

Buying every tool at once. One assistant, one design tool, and one store is enough to start.

Skipping a test purchase. Buy your own product and check the delivery email.

Making claims you cannot support. Do not promise income or results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What AI tools do I need to make a digital product? At minimum, an AI assistant for research and drafts, a design tool for the cover and layout, and a platform to sell it.

Which platform is best for beginners? Gumroad is simple and handles tax, but its fixed fee hurts cheap products. Payhip’s free plan has a lower percentage. Compare on a real price.

Can I sell templates made in Canva? Canva’s license allows Free Content in templates for sale, but not Pro Content. Read the agreement.

Do I need an email list? Not on day one, but it is the cheapest way to sell again to people who liked your first product.

Is AI-written content allowed on these platforms? Rules differ by platform and change over time. Read each platform’s current policy.

The Bottom Line

A digital product needs fewer tools than the internet suggests: an AI assistant to think and draft with, a design tool for the finished look, a store that handles checkout and tax, and an email tool when you are ready to build an audience. Pick the simplest path, check the license and fee pages before you sell, and spend your time on the part AI cannot do for you: knowing what your buyers need.
